“2015 ADA Celebration”
On July 25th 2015 MHI celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA). MHI staff provided valuable information about the ADA laws and the rights people with disabilities. Thanks to the Houston Astros for providing tickets for MHI consumers to celebrate the American with Disability Act.
This past school year (2011-2012) MHCIL in partnership with La Marque, Texas City, and Dickinson High Schools worked with each of the school’s Transitioning Students in our ILS (Independent Living Skills) program. The students enjoyed the many games and food at Main Event. The awards presentation was held at Main Event in Webster, TX on 6/9/2012. The students were presented awards for Participation and Completion of the 5 programs: Money Management, Job Readiness, Basic Computer Skills, ILS, and Travel Training. Everyone enjoyed the experience which was a fun ending to a great year of the program.
MHCIL staff at VGS working with consumers registering them with the JARC Travel Program through TxDOT. Consumers went through the training and then signed up to use the transportation vouchers for employment related activities.
“ The Talent has No boundaries” job fair was in Texas City
MHCIL was providing Information & referral for the consumers who were in need of services. The Highlighted services included the new Transportation (TxDOT) and TBRA Housing (TDHCA) programs along with the 5 Core Services programs that MHCIL has.
MCHIL attended the SILC (State Independence Living Conference) in Dallas, TX this past April 2012. The conference discussed varied topics that benefitted the Centers for Independent Living around Texas and the United States. The issues of housing, transportation, and voting were highlighted in the different seminars that were held. Keynote speakers for the conference were Jim Dickson VP of Organizing and Civic Engagement with the American association of the People with Disabilities and Geri Jewell, actress/comedienne who starred on NBC hit television show “The Facts of Life” who was born with cerebral palsy.
